Bad breath is mostly a hygiene issue but there are times when an underlying condition causes it. One of such conditions is Diabetes-related halitosis, and here’s how it happens:

  1. Diabetes is the most common metabolic disorder — it disrupts the processing and distribution of nutrients in your body. And as a result, substances can build up in your saliva, causing bad breath.
  2. Diabetes can damage blood vessels which reduces blood flow in your body. This affects your gums and teeth, making them weak and vulnerable to infections.
  3. Your body needs insulin to turn glucose into energy, but when your insulin level is low, it uses fat instead. The result? An acid called ketones. But when the ketone level is too high, it makes your breath smell like nail polish.

Here are 5 things you can do:

  1. Brush your teeth at least 2x daily
  2. Scrape your tongue to prevent bacteria growth
  3. Drink water and keep your mouth moist
  4. Monitor your blood sugar level regularly
  5. Visit your dentist for checkups at intervals
